Townsville Bulletin Kite Festival
4-5th October 2008

Hi-Res image available (opens in new window)

The 2nd year of the Festival and this year I was fortunate enough to be invited to attend. It's been some years since I've been to Townsville and it was great to be back.
The Team at the Townsville Bulletin put on a fabulous Festival and I'm sure I can speak for all of the kite flyers attending that we were very grateful for looking after us so well and their assistance over the weekend. An absolutely astounding job from them all and moreso when looking after kiteflyers must surely come close to looking after a bunch of big kids.
Hi Res
Hi Res.
Hi Res

Spot the imposter amongst the Peter Lynn kites. Thank you to Craig Hansen for allowing Felix and Dino some space on his lines on both days when the flying area became crowded. On the Saturday we were able to get up quite a few lifters as the crowd began to arrive, but on Sunday it seemed that word had got out and the park filled up very quickly with families out to enjoy the day.
Inevitably there were a few tangles and one tree became a magnet to 3 kites on Saturday, and on Sunday 2 other kites took in the view from the top of another tree for a few hours before the cherry picker arrived to save the day. As the wind picked up on Sunday it was a team effort with the men walking down the Manta ray and some crowd control required. A scary excersise, but everything went safely to plan.
It was lovely to meet up with Californian, Ron Gibian and chat about the more artistic side of kite creation, but all good things come to an end and reluctantly it was time for the Brisbane contingent and myself to pack up on Sunday afternoon and dash to the airport. The last view out the airplane window flying over the Strand, we could still see Craig's big Ted and Steve's Nemo flying high.

Once again, our big thanks for all at the Townsville Bulletin for their care and attention to detail. A wonderful festival not only for the Kite flyers, but the large crowds on both days, I'm not sure who enjoyed themselves more!
